Doha — Tensions ran high after the race as Red Bull Racing launched strong accusations against Mercedes AMG Petronas driver Kimi Antonelli following the dramatic 2025 Qatar Grand Prix on Monday (Dec 1) early morning local time.
The Milton Keynes–based team claimed that Antonelli’s behavior in the final two laps appeared “suspicious” and indirectly benefited Lando Norris, who ultimately clinched the 2025 Formula 1 World Championship.
Two “Strange” Laps Under the Spotlight
The controversy began on laps 55 and 56, when Norris—locked in a fierce title fight with Red Bull’s lead driver—closed in on Antonelli, who at that point was not involved in a podium battle.
According to Red Bull, Antonelli looked unusually passive as Norris approached, giving more space than expected at key corners such as Turn 1 and Turn 12.
This behavior was deemed “out of character” by Red Bull engineers, especially compared with the defensive driving Antonelli had shown earlier in the race.
Red Bull: “It Raises Questions”
One internal Red Bull source, speaking anonymously, said Antonelli’s actions raised suspicion because they happened at the most decisive moment of the title fight.
“We’re not saying it was a team order—of course not. But his moves didn’t match his typical defending style. In the last two laps, every decision counts toward the championship. And what happened definitely raises questions,” the source said.
Red Bull insisted they were not alleging any inter-team conspiracy, but they urged the FIA to “look at the data and understand the context” of those final laps.
Mercedes Denies: “Antonelli Was Just Avoiding Risk”
Mercedes swiftly denied the accusations. In an official statement, the Silver Arrows said Antonelli was simply trying to avoid unnecessary risk that could harm himself or others.
“Kimi was not fighting for a crucial position or points. His tyres were worn, and he chose a safe approach. There was no intention to benefit anyone,” Mercedes stated.
Antonelli himself insisted he received no special instructions.
“I just didn’t want an accident in the last two laps. That’s it. Lando was faster. Nothing unusual,” he said in the paddock.
Norris Refuses to Be Drawn Into the Controversy
As the driver alleged to have benefitted, Lando Norris chose not to escalate the debate. He said the accusations were simply part of the “usual tension” in a title fight.
“I won through hard work across the season. People can say whatever they want,” Norris commented.
Will the FIA Review It?
As of this writing, the FIA has not issued an official comment. However, several analysts believe the incident is unlikely to lead to further action, as no clear technical violation occurred.
A Sign of a Heated 2026 Rivalry Ahead
Both Red Bull and Mercedes view this incident as an early indicator of the brewing rivalry leading into the 2026 regulations. With Antonelli rising and Norris now a world champion, every gesture on track is bound to carry extra tension.
